Structural Steel Site Manager




£55 - £60K + £4680 Travel Allowance + Bonus (guaranteed) + Package

Our client are a very established specialist main contractor based on the South Coast.  With well over 25 years’ experience delivering projects ranging in value from £2 - £20M.  Operating in the capacity of both Principle and Sub-Contractor with work located nationally.  Typical scope of works would include groundworks, piling, drainage, steel & RC Structures along with M & E.  The company are extremely stringent on Health & Safety and “walk their talk”.

They are looking to recruit a permanent Site Manager to join the business.  The projects are based all over, so location of home location is flexible.  The successful candidate will ideally need to have experience managing steel frame erection for sub-contractors.



  • Familiarisation with the contract drawings, specification, scope, programme and contract requirements, in particular with respect to site safety, quality, scope and budget. These will be briefed by the Project/Contracts Manager upon appointment to the contract.
  • Provide input to the Project/Contracts Manager in formulation and upkeep of the contract programme.
  • Production, maintenance and amendment, when necessary, of delivery schedules
  • Produce and amend, when necessary, the Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Lift Plans and associated documentation necessary to carry out the site activities.
  • Carry out pre-commencement SSHO inspections and pre-commencement surveys, in accordance with the company procedures and contract requirements.
  • Ensure all site accommodation and attendances are in place to the agreed standards and requirements.
  • Ensure the timely procurement of all resources necessary to carry out the Company’s site activities.
  • Management and control of in-house and sub-contract operatives, engineering surveyors and supervisory team.
  • Management and control of sub-contracted site activities.
  • Co-ordination of site activities with the Client site team.
  • Completion, compilation, and issue of all necessary site quality documentation.
  • Compilation of NCR reports including liaison with the contracts manager, BEL, and quality department to rectify NCRs at the earliest opportunity.
  • Report all accidents, incidents and near misses in accordance with the company procedures, including investigation of the same when required.
  • Liaise fully with the Company’s safety officers/advisors and the clients safety representatives.
  • Undertake all duties in line with the BGLPM 7.09 Competency Management Procedure
  • When appropriately trained, be the named person in the project Health and Safety Plan as Temporary Works Supervisor, First Aider, COSHH Co-ordinator, Fire Safety Manager.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties, deemed to be within capabilities, as required by the contract/project manager and/or construction manager.
  • Compilation and issue weekly of Site Managers Reports and Site Resource Reports.


Essential Knowledge

  • Demonstrable knowledge of steel construction methods and practice.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of site Health and Safety Requirements.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of site Quality requirements.



  • Proven experience in a constructional steel site management role.
  • Demonstrable experience in the planning and programming of steelwork (and associated packages e.g. decking, painting, welding) installation.
  • Demonstrable experience in the production of Risk Assessments, Method Statements, Lift Plans and associated site documentation.
  • Demonstrable experience in the operation of site Quality Plans and ITPs
  • Demonstrable experience in the erection of the majority of the steel structures and operations:
  • High rise structures
  • Medium rise and city centre structures
  • Low rise, truss and portal frame structures
  • Rail structures.
  • Heavy civils structures e.g. power stations and refineries.
  • Refurbishment type work including welding operations.
  • Site painting.
  • Other, such as Nuclear, MOD, Airports.




  • CSCS black/platinum in site management + NVQ6
  • SMSTS or IOSH equivalent
  • CPCS Appointed Person – lifting operations (competent operator)
  • Temporary Works Supervisor CITB qualification.
  • Qualification in management of work at height.
  • MEWPs for Managers IPAF qualification
  • Full Driving License.
  • Site Environmental Awareness Training Scheme (SEATS) CITB qualification




  • Good computer skills, in particular MS Word, Excel and Web based applications.
  • Proven ability to manage, motivate and develop individuals and teams.
  • Commitment to quality of delivery.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work accurately to tight deadlines.
  • Proven ability to work pro-actively on own initiative and as part of a team.


The role is site based and as locations can vary the job holder must be willing to travel and stay away from home as required.
